Quaker State Nationals
By Mr. & Mrs. Antdog aka The Brown Family
With the Olympics being a few days away you can bet, and this being one of the best tracks on the east coast, you could feel the buzz in the air. But to honest you had a lot of racers at this event you could see in the 2016 Olympics and beyond.
A Pro
Just because there were no AA pro’s at this race does not mean the race action would not be intense; you put a bunch of A pro’s on the gate and wave some cash, you are going to see some hardcore race action. But on this weekend it proved to be the Max Egdorf (Rennen/Answer) and Danny Smith (Road kill/Point Pleasant) show for the top 2 spots the entire weekend. While Max was in the lead most of the weekend, Danny was showing true grit by working his way through the pack, like a hungry lion chasing that zebra. On Saturday, Leroy Moses (Staats) took the third and Sunday the flying Frenchman, Arthur Goarin took the third on Sunday. I liken this class to the next generation of AA, although I did not race as a young man, I did follow the sport, and remember reading how guys like Mike King, and Billy Griggs could not wait to move up. When I look into the eyes of these guys, I see the same fire that I used to read about.
Jr. Devo
What A pro is to AA this class is the latter. You have some of the most talented BMX racers in the nation racing this class. But I have to give some recognition to CJBMX local Lil Lenny Hicks. (Shore Cycling) I have seen him race countless times over the years, but seeing him on the gate for this class made me realize how far he has come. Racing is in his blood as his dad Big Lenny was quite the racer in his day. And yes I could see the smile on Dad’s face a mile away, as he took fourth. But no one was stopping Justin Knapper (Answer/Rennen) on Saturday. Justin is another racer who I have watched develop over the years, and I can say this in all honesty, I had trouble taking pictures of him due to his speed, I had not seen him race in a while and had to readjust my camera to get a picture. Needless to say he won Saturday. On Sunday he just raced class, and that left the door open for Luke Roartary (Hyper) to take the win , Followed by Kavin Bradner, (KID DYNAMITE) ,for the two spot. As I said this is the breeding ground for the next group of A pro racers, so I suggest you keep an eye on this class.
Expert Highlights
Let’s talk the expert class. My pick to win 41x, Jud Ciancio, only raced cruiser, so the door was wide open. Now the average person might think 41, oh these guys can’t be fast. But do not let the age fool you. This is one of the premier classes in BMX racing. By being able to race at this level over the age of 40 says you are committed to the sport of BMX racing. On day 1 Scott Moreland (Dan’s Comp) Jeremy Thompson (Felt) and Tommy Board (Redline) took the 1-2-3 but Sunday came and Tommy took a hard fought win and Moreland in the three spot. 36-40x was a battle that I have witnessed for the last year and a half. John Paul Pfieffer, (Hyper), and Chris Diaz (Point Pleasant) swapping 1 & 2 for the weekend. A big get well goes out to Shawn Diprete, he went down hard, but we all know Shawn is tough as nails and will be back.
19-27 experts, all I can say is faster than greased moose poop. Menardo Simon (FBN Hyper) took home the win Saturday; Brandon McCoy (Morphine) killed it on Sunday. Robbie Patterson was in the house and I have seen video of him but after seeing him in person I believe the hype. A 4th on Saturday and a 2nd on Sunday does not show his true talent, the kid is a ripper. The little guys do not get enough props but this time they will 11x saw Nate Caron (Chain Reaction) win class both days. Trey Maeker (Formula) also took home wins both days. This is an example of pure determination. With all of is being under one umbrella, the classes are harder and to win both days in any class is no small feat. I do not mean to sound biased, but there is one 7x out there that is making his mark, PJ O’Brien (Point Pleasant) why is he so special, he is one of the smaller kids out there but packs a big punch, I have practiced with him and I can admit, e kid has snapped me out of the gate each time.
INTERMEDIATE
The 41 and over class, as one of the guys in that class I can say that we are the most smack talking guys on the gate, but when the gate drops that changes, we give it our all and then the smack talk resumes. Tom Latkanich (Thunder racing) was the lead smacta…… I mean winner on Saturday and Rodney Rice on Sunday. Me I did not transfer out, but as usual still had a lot of fun. 17-18 Inter was won on Saturday by Alex Mctaggart (Cyclecraft) and on Sunday. Expect a move up to expert for him soon. Now did anyone see a kid on a neon green 1988 mongoose decade doing x ups going into turn 2? Well his name is Tim Wilson Aka Freedo from BMXMUSEUM.COM. The thing about Tim is he does not ride a new school bike and does not care to, he is out there to have fun, and he does, if you are ever at Trilogy and have a question about and old school bike feel free to ask him.
Novice
I have seen on the web people say that novices should not be able to race nationals, well I pose this question, have you forgotten that you were once a novice who wanted to make a name for himself? 41& over is where a lot of the older guys get their start and let me tell you these guys may start out squirrely but end up in the intermediate class sooner than later. John Herbert (TramaTeam) was the Saturday winner and Paul Henry Liberty/GHP/Fly) was the Sunday winner, rather than sit on a couch these guys are racing BMX!!!! 16 Novice had Steven Spielli of NJ winning both days; I predict we will see him move up soon. 11 novice saw Evan Thompson of Ohio do the same thing, yep he be moving ups soon as well. There is one special 5 and under novice HER name is Cassidy Hall (Hyper Northeast) She started on a strider but due to the influence of her big brother went right to a 2 wheeler, she does not say much and does not have to, she pedals here way around the track with a smile on her face an her entire team cheering her on.
Ladies 20 inch & Men’s Cruiser
In the 8 ladies class Salem Robertson,(Hostile BMX) won both days, it should be noted that she hails from Texas, so that says a lot. People were willing to travel across the country to come here. In the 10 ladies class Payton Ridenhour (Vendetta/Elite) showed up and won both days. She is a former local to the track, now residing in Arizona. But her and her father Keith come to this race every year. She also has her own brand Evil Endustries, so if you are at a national and see her ask for a sticker, she will gladly give you one.
17 -27 ladies saw the return of Cheyenne Noud (Point Pleasant) she suffered a major injury at the last NBL Grands and this was her first national back. It was a battle between Chelsea Moser, Taylor Thompson (DFR) Cheyenne and her teammate Shannon Walsh. Taylor took the win both days and Shannon took a 4th, Ms. Noud & Ms. Moser was the battle, both exhibit raw power and are a threat at any race. I see these ladies race and I predict both will be in the elite class and have success. 28 and over had 3 riders, with Meredith Lidstone (Felt) sweeping the weekend. But Jill Mcguire (Powers) and Heather Heavens (Chip-n-Dale) gave it their all.
The men’s cruiser class is always a good one to watch, from 9 year old Marcus Christopher (Felt) , 10 year old J Dub Ketron (Powers) all the way up to the most exciting cruiser class of the day 41- 45.
That class is always stacked at a national, R.L. Cup, and locals.

Striders
Strider riders were out in effect, and to be honest you can’t neglect the future radsters of BMX. Some of them do not stay on them for long, as they go right to the bike. But when they are on em, you can see the smile a mile away

Before I conclude this I must mention MRS. Antdog and mines favorite moment of the weekend. Seeing Crystina Patrick pedal around the track at, what makes this special, I will let her mother handle this one
‘This is my 2 year old that am very proud of and do hope one day she will be a very good rider her name is Crystina Patrick she is from Horseheads NY she was born December 7 2009 her older sister was also in the moto...they ride together everyday
and love it...Cena probably would have been riding at 1 if we didn't have a winter, lol from the day she was born she loved to play with bikes even at 2 she probably knows how to take care of them better than her mom lol thank you all we love this little monster and if you know this kid you know she is a monster”
Well this brings us to the end, I would like to thank the Knapper family for providing an excellent track, the EMT’s who were right on the case all weekend long, the volunteers, the vendors and most of all the racers and families that travel to the races, In these hard economic times you have the option of where to spend your money, and the entire staff of USABMX is thankful that you choose to spend it with them.
Oh one more thing I recommend the Barbecue place BONEYARD JOE’S around the corner from the track, 148 shoemaker road. All I have to say is the Deep Fried Barbecued chicken will make your mouth water, and he also wants to become involved with the track, that is by all means a good thing. Also want to thank Mrs. Antdog for helping me write this report and doing 100 percent of the driving, something about me having a lead foot?
